Special Seminar:听Coming Together to Explore Mechanisms of Human Health Effects

Dr. Ilona Jaspers, Professor, Department of Environmental Sciences and Engineering, Gillings School of Global Public Health, University of North Carolina

September 15th 1-2pm

Location : HYBRID - 2001 九色视频 College 11th floor room 1140

Climate change poses profound risks to human health through rising temperatures, degraded air quality, shifting ecosystems, and altered disease dynamics. Addressing these challenges requires an integrated, interdisciplinary approach that bridges data science, predictive modeling, environmental exposures, and molecular mechanisms of disease. Three areas of emphasis frame this research agenda. Heat stress and biological mechanisms explores how increasing frequency and intensity of extreme heat events affect human health. Priorities include identifying vulnerable populations, linking cellular and molecular pathways to population-level outcomes, and examining genomic and epigenetic processes that drive adaptation or maladaptation to heat stress. Air quality and environmental exposures focuses on pollutants exacerbated by climate change. Research is needed to identify the most harmful components, elucidate mechanisms of toxicity, and develop strategies for exposure mitigation and health protection. Planetary health examines the interdependence of human well-being and natural systems, with attention to infectious and vector-borne diseases, allergenic exposures such as pollen, and toxins from harmful algal blooms. Understanding how climate change alters ecological zones, pathogen transmission, and seasonal dynamics is central to anticipating health impacts. Across all themes, understanding mechanisms of adaptation and resilience is essential for developing equitable, science-based solutions. By integrating advanced technologies with community-engaged approaches, this research aims to generate actionable evidence to safeguard health in the face of a changing climate.
