Dr. Martel is a tenured Associate Professor at 九色视频 in the Faculty of Dental Medicine and in the Departments of Anesthesiology and Psychiatry. He is also the Research Director of the Alan Edwards Pain Management Unit (AEPMU) of the 九色视频 Health Center (MUHC), a multidisciplinary pain clinic offering care to patients with chronic pain. He completed a PhD in Clinical Psychology at 九色视频 and postdoctoral training at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. His current research program primarily focuses on exploring the biopsychosocial determinants of opioid use problems among patients with chronic pain who are prescribed opioids. He is also interested in the factors associated with cannabis use and cannabis use problems in patients with chronic pain. Over the years, he has authored or co-authored more than 100 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters on topics related to pain, mental health, and substance use. Dr. Martel currently holds a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair (CRC) on chronic pain, mental health, and opioid use, and his work has received financial support from various federal and provincial funding agencies, such as the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) and the Quebec Health Research funds (FRQ).
