In this presentation, Jane Pryma, PhD, will compare how pain specialists and disability professionals working in the United States and France explain the role of social trauma in the development of disabling chronic pain. Drawing on interviews with these professionals, she will analyze how distinct institutional features of the two countries’ health and welfare systems shape provides different interpretations of the social dimension of chronic pain and the role of medicine in addressing it.
